On May 14, 2020, an online scientific conference on the topic “Preventive Diplomacy: An Example of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and the UNRCCA” was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

This event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan jointly with the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan at the UN Office in Geneva together with the Geneva Center for Security Policy.

From the Turkmen side, the event was attended by the rector of the International University of Humanities and Development, as well as students and faculty of the IMO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, International University of Humanities and Development, as well as Turkmen State University named after Makhtumkuli.

The conference was also attended by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and UNRCCA Head Natalia Gherman, Director of the Geneva Center for Security Policy Christian Dussey, Permanent Representatives of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to the UN Office at Geneva.

During the conference, the participants noted that the neutrality of Turkmenistan has become a significant factor in promoting international peacekeeping efforts in the region. Turkmenistan has become a reliable ally and effective partner of the United Nations in maintaining political stability in the region, developing good neighborliness, friendship and cooperation. This was confirmed by the decision of the international community with the support of all the states of the region to open in 2007 in Ashgabat the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia.

It was also emphasized that Turkmen neutrality is a significant factor in regional security. The basic principles of neutrality are fully consistent with the UN strategic guidelines in Central Asia, aimed at turning the region into a zone of peace and cooperation, a strong link of continental stability.

The readiness of Turkmenistan for wide and active cooperation with countries and international organizations in the name of achieving common creative goals was noted.
